It's October! Feel Those Boobies!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer awareness is very near and dear to my heart.
I lost my mom to it when I was 18. She was only 46. I have educated my girls on self exams since they were old enough to know. I think it is our first line of defense against this horrendous disease and as ladies, we should know how and when to do it. So here is your reminder to do your self exam this month! Also, if you are over the age of 40 with a family history of breast cancer, please go get a mammogram. If you are over the age of 45, you should be going every year. These are just as important. I had to have my first at the age of 30. They suck. Big time. They hurt, the technicians smoosh your boobs into positions that are not natural, BUT they can also find things that you didn't know were there. The earlier you can detect abnormalities, the better.

For the self exams, you can either do it in the shower, or lying down on the bed. Either is fine. Put your arm behind your head and feel with the other hand.. You should do this about 3-5 days after your period starts. (For those of you like me, without a period, anytime is fine.)  Start feeling the outside toward your armpit and move in toward your nipple as follows-(You can use any of these patterns)

Also look in the mirror. If you notice any kind of lump, dimpling of the skin, change in skin color or texture, change in the appearance of your nipple, your nipple drawing in, or any kind of clear or bloody discharge from the nipple, you need to see your doctor as soon as possible.

You should also have an exam like this done by your doctor once a year at your yearly checkup. This way, anything out of the ordinary can be caught quickly.

Now go check those boobies!!!
